History & Beneficial Properties

Figs are one of the most beloved superfoods in Greek history.
In 9 BC figs are believed to have been brought to Ancient Greece from Egypt - but their growth quickly spread throughout the land. The ancient Greeks believed that figs represented prosperity and peace. Today, they still thrive in the Mediterranean climate and you can find them growing almost everywhere. They are a key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet.

What makes Greek figs so special?
Although figs are not native to Greece, they have become a staple of the Greek diet and culture. At one time in Greek history, figs were believed to be so valuable that they could not be exported! Due to Greece's moderate temperature and constant sunshine, figs thrive - so much so that nowadays August is known as "the month of the fig" in Greece because the fruit is so plentiful and ripe. Greeks consume figs all year round, fresh or dried, because of their health benefits and delicious taste.

What are the health benefits of figs?
One of the main health benefits that figs offer is lowering blood pressure and protecting bones. They are packed with potassium and calcium - two essential nutrients for longevity. Their rich content of minerals that strengthen our bones, including calcium and potassium, prevents the loss of calcium in the urine caused by high salt consumption and makes figs our allies against osteoporosis.

Prevention of heart disease
Animal studies have shown that eating this delicious fruit can lower blood triglyceride levels and thus prevent long-term cardiovascular disease. Triglycerides are the main form of fat circulating in the blood, and the higher their levels, the greater the chance of obesity and heart disease.

Figs belong to the category of the most nutritious fruits while at the same time they have at least nine recognized medicinal properties, they were known to be the favorite fruits of the Ancient Greeks.
They are rich in vitamins A, B1 and B2 and minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and others.
Ficus carica L., commonly known as fig, originates from northern Asia Minor and spread with the Greeks throughout the Mediterranean region.
